E-bike and E-scooter Safety Tips Explained
Staff Report / FLXlocal.org
The Farmington Volunteer Fire Association is emphasizing safety tips regarding the use of electric bikes (e-bikes) and electric scooters (e-scooters) in light of their growing popularity. These devices are powered by lithium-ion batteries, which can pose hazards if not handled properly. When damaged or defective, these batteries have the potential to overheat, catch fire, or even explode. Additionally, fires from lithium-ion batteries can release toxic gases and burn at extremely high temperatures.
To ensure safe operation and charging of e-bikes and e-scooters, the Farmington Volunteer Fire Association advises the following safety measures:
- Purchase devices, batteries, and chargers that are certified by recognized testing labs and are properly labeled.
- Adhere strictly to instructions provided by manufacturers.
- Use only the specific charger and battery that were designed for the device.
- Disconnect the charger once the battery is fully charged to prevent overcharging.
- Charge only one device or battery at a time to avoid overloading electrical circuits.
- Store batteries at room temperature and avoid charging at temperatures below 32°F (0°C) or above 105°F (40°C).
- Keep batteries out of direct sunlight and away from hot vehicles, as well as away from children and liquids.
Users are advised to stop using their e-bike or e-scooter if they notice any signs of battery problems. The Farmington Volunteer Fire Association is sharing these vital safety tips as part of the preparations for their annual open house, scheduled for tomorrow.
