Attendance Key to Early Reading Success, Report Shows

Staff Report / FLXlocal.org

A recent infographic developed by Attendance Works, based on data from the Auburn Enlarged City School District in Auburn, New York, highlights the relationship between school attendance and reading proficiency by the third grade.

The findings indicate that 64% of students with good attendance in kindergarten and first grade—defined as missing nine or fewer days during both years—can read at grade level by third grade. In contrast, only 43% of students classified with at-risk attendance, who missed more than nine days in both years, achieve the same reading proficiency. Among students who were chronically absent in kindergarten or first grade, missing 18 or more days in one year, just 41% can read on grade level. Furthermore, only 17% of those who were chronically absent for both years reach this milestone.

The report underscores the importance of consistent school attendance for improving educational outcomes and provides several strategies for parents to enhance attendance and subsequently achievement. Recommendations include establishing a regular bedtime and morning routine, preparing clothes and backpacks the night before, scheduling medical appointments after school, avoiding extended trips during the school year, creating backup plans for transportation, and introducing children to their teachers and classmates prior to the start of school. Parents are also encouraged to find out the start date of school, ensure children have the required vaccinations, and seek advice if their child expresses anxiety about attending school. Notably, complaints of stomachaches or headaches may indicate anxiety rather than legitimate reasons to miss school.

The infographic emphasizes that even a few missed days can negatively impact a student's ability to read and succeed academically.
