Heating Safety Tips for a Fire-Free Winter

Staff Report / FLXlocal.org

As colder weather approaches, safety officials are urging residents to prioritize heating safety in their homes. Following a set of safety tips can help reduce the risk of fire and carbon monoxide exposure during the winter months.

To prevent fires, it is essential to keep combustible materials at least three feet away from fireplaces and wood stoves. Burning paper in these heating units is not recommended. Residents should always extinguish fires in their fireplaces before leaving home or going to sleep. Additionally, it is advised to regularly have chimneys inspected and cleaned by a professional at least once a year.

When disposing of ashes, they should be placed in a metal container with a lid and stored outside, at least ten feet away from the home.

To ensure heating systems function properly, residents are advised to change filters on their furnaces and maintain clear areas around these units. Regular professional inspections and cleanings of heating systems are recommended annually.

It is also crucial to have smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms installed in homes. Carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas, can be emitted by malfunctioning heating systems and poses serious health risks. Residents should react immediately if their carbon monoxide alarm sounds: evacuate the house and call 911.

These guidelines aim to promote safety and awareness as the winter season begins.
